Psychology and Behaviour (POB) class brought an outstanding guest lecturer, a motivator named Maristela, Tuesday (13/7/2021). She is a motivator focusing on Women’s Empowerment. Therefore, the topic she presented is about the role of women in the change happening in the world.
She gave a little experience of her life. She became a motivator because her grandmother taught her a lot about life. She learned a lot from her grandmother, and one of the things she noted was about “mistake into a miracle.” She explained that the mistakes we made could be a miracle for our lives.
“The meaning is that the mistakes that we made should be a useful lesson for the future,” said Maristela.
She began her explanation on how women’s roles in change. There is a phrase saying ‘change or die,’ teaching us that change is very important. If we don’t change, we will die because, by changing, we find something new and become something new.
Change comes from the etymological language, i.e., mutato, which means something new and unprecedented or something different. Thus, it can be concluded that a change is a process of metamorphosis of an event from the initial form into something new.
The changes that occurred must be responded to as quickly as possible. It should also involve all existing roles, including women. The role of a real woman is often underestimated and distinguished from the role of a man. There are still many who think that women can’t do what men do. So many people underestimate what women do or their role in the world. It can be seen from the many syndromes in the women’s world, such as princess syndrome, ruby syndrome, and other syndromes that become stereotypes for women. However, change does not see people as a woman or a man because the change comes from ourselves and certainly depends on our behavior and attitude as human beings.
“The change is started from the family, as we can see from a woman’s role as a mother in the family. A mother, of course, wants to create a harmonious family. Thus, many changes are needed to make her family’s condition better in the future,” said Maristela.
Some companies have also realized the positive impact of the women’s role in the C-suite (Executive Level), especially in responding to a change in the company. First, companies are increasingly open to change and minimize risks. Second, the company’s focus was transformed from M&A (Buying Knowledge) to R&D (Building Knowledge). Therefore, nowadays, the role of women has been considered, many women become an entrepreneur or often called as a women entrepreneur.
Maristela also explained five ways to change. First, identify your passion and your pain. By identifying our skills and weaknesses, we increasingly understand what aspects need to change.
Second, start with yourself. The change will not happen if we only rely on others. Therefore, change begins with ourselves.
Third, begin with one person, then multiply. Changes are made from a small scope before being applied to a wider context gradually.
Fourth, twice bigger and twice better. In the process of change, many will refuse. However, when anyone refuses, we must not give up. Instead, we must exert our power twice as much as before and continuously as it is.
Fifth, the process is important; start small and keep building. Consistency is the key in the process of change. The class ended with her quote, “Don’t make changes too complicated, just begin.”
