SBM ITB held a doctoral promotion session for promovendous Yolli Eka Putri, with the dissertation entitled “Peer-to-Peer Lending Type of Loans, CEO Characteristics, and Non-Performing Loans: Case in Indonesia,” Wednesday (12/1/2022). Prof. Dr. Ir Sudrajati Ratnaningtyas chaired the session, with the promoter Prof. Dr. Ir. Sudarso Kaderi Wiryono and co-promoter Dr. Yunieta Anny Nainggolan.
In her dissertation, Yolli explores Peer-to-Peer Lending (P2P lending) in Indonesia, specifically the relationship between consumer loans, productive loans, age of P2P platforms’ CEO, and license maintenance to non-performing loans (NPL) on P2P platforms. The research was conducted using eleven independent variables with two control variables and processed using the panel regression method with data from 61 OJK-registered P2P lending platforms.
The study concluded that consumer loans were positively related to NPL, while productive loans were negatively related. The CEO age and license maintenance are also negatively related to NPL. However, the finding of this relationship between license maintenance and NPL is not supported by other studies and requires further research. With these findings, this research is the first to confirm the relationship between consumer lending, productive lending, P2P platform CEO’s age, and license maintenance on NPL.
This research proposes several recommendations for both regulators as policyholders and owners of P2P lending platforms. First, regulators must support offering productive loans on P2P lending platforms and create risk mitigation for platforms that offer consumer loans. Second, regulators need to address licensing challenges flexibly but pragmatically and consider the sharing economy’s benefits from the P2P lending industry. P2P lending platform owners should also focus more on lending for productive activities, especially for new P2P platforms, and consider age and education in appointing their CEO.
After the presentation session by promovendous, the chairwoman of the session allowed the examiner team consisting of Prof. Dr. Irwan Tri Nugroho, Oktofa Yudha Sudrajad, Ph.D., and Dr. Ir. Subiakto Sukarno, MBA, and promoters and co-promoters provide questions related to the dissertation. Yolli successfully defended her dissertation and graduated with Cum Laude.
