Faculty members from the Operations and Production Management Expertise Group (KK OPM) at the SBM ITB, in collaboration with the Cooperative Office of the Bangka Belitung Islands, successfully organized a three-day community engagement event from July 1 to 3, 2024. The event was held at the Integrated Business Services Center for Cooperatives and SMEs (PLUT-KUMKM) in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province (Babel).
The objective of this event was to enhance the awareness and understanding of SME consultants and assistants regarding the importance of waste analysis, the application of the 5S concept, and the identification and management of bottlenecks in production processes.
The event, attended by more than 25 participants, was inaugurated by KK OPM Chairperson Prof. Dermawan Wibisono. In his opening remarks, Prof. Dermawan emphasized the importance of waste analysis and production efficiency in enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs in the modern era. Prof. Dermawan stated, “We hope this event provides theoretical knowledge and practical applications that SMEs can immediately implement. Thus, SMEs can become more competitive and positively contribute to the local economy.”
Waste Analysis
In the first session, participants deeply understood the importance of waste analysis. The topics covered common types of waste in businesses and practical solutions to address them. Participants were also introduced to several waste analysis frameworks, such as FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and fishbone diagrams. With this practical understanding, business practitioners are expected to implement effective and efficient operational processes, feeling empowered and capable.
Application of 5S
The second session introduced participants to the 5S concept. Comprising Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain), 5S is an effective method for creating a more organized and efficient work environment. Through simulations and direct practices, participants were encouraged and entrusted with the responsibility to implement 5S at home and in their workplaces, ultimately aiming to enhance productivity and quality of life, fostering a sense of commitment among the participants.
Identification and Management of Bottlenecks
The final session focused on introducing the concept of bottlenecks in production processes. Bottlenecks are points in the process that hinder workflow and reduce overall efficiency. Participants were guided to identify bottlenecks in daily activities and small-scale production contexts and were provided with practical solutions to manage and minimize the impact of these bottlenecks.
The initiative received high appreciation from SME consultants and assistants. One participant, Rifqi, expressed, “I greatly benefited from the new knowledge I gained about waste analysis, bottlenecks, and the application of 5S. This will be very beneficial for my family and our community.”
Through such community engagement activities, it is hoped that positive changes in mindset and practices among SMEs in the Bangka Belitung province towards sustainable business practices will be encouraged.
