Twenty-four students from various programs at the SBM ITB, participated in journalism training at the SBM ITB Campus, Bandung, on Saturday (10/19). This training aims to strengthen reporter competencies to be effective and relevant in the digital era because they will be the spearhead of university publications.

The training was led by TEMPO Editor Khairul Anam and detikJabar Editor-in-Chief Baban Gandapurnama. Khairul Anam shared valuable insights into the fundamentals of journalism, emphasizing that being a journalist goes beyond writing news; it involves understanding the story behind every event covered.

“Writing news requires calmness, understanding, and, of course, accuracy. Don’t forget to always check your writing before submitting it,” said Khairul.

Student reporters also had the chance to have one-on-one sessions with Khairul, receiving direct feedback from experienced media professionals.

Meanwhile, Baban Gandapurnama provided essential tips on crafting headlines that captivate readers. He explained that a strong headline is the first element that draws readers to continue engaging with a news story.

“Don’t hesitate to create a sharp and relevant headline. Focus on substance, not just ceremonial details,” Baban said.

Baban also stressed the importance of a compelling lead and timely news distribution to enhance the visibility of reporters’ work in major media outlets.

Cindy, a student reporter who participated in the training, shared that she gained valuable insights, making her more confident in her news writing.

“I hadn’t written a news article in a long time, and initially, it felt stiff. But after this training, my journalism skills feel refreshed, and I’m ready to write even better,” Cindy said enthusiastically.

She noted that meeting journalists from prominent outlets like TEMPO and detikJabar was an unforgettable experience.

This training marks a significant step for SBM ITB in equipping students with essential journalism skills while strengthening the campus communication strategy.
