Dr. Mahir Pradana, an Associate Professor from Telkom University, highlighted bibliometric analysis as an innovative approach that simplifies the literature review process in research. This method enables researchers to map research trends, identify key authors, and enhance the potential for significant research contributions.
“Bibliometrics helps researchers analyze research patterns more systematically than traditional literature review methods. Using software like VOSviewer and Biblioshiny, data visualization becomes clearer and more structured,” Dr Mahir explained during an interactive discussion at the MSM and DSM Lounge SBM ITB on Thursday (7/11).
According to Dr. Mahir, bibliometric analysis is one of three approaches commonly used in literature reviews, particularly for analyzing large-scale mixed data. The other approaches include systematic literature review (SLR), ideal for analyzing small-scale qualitative data, and meta-analysis, which is suited for homogeneous quantitative data.
“Data for bibliometric analysis can be sourced from Scopus, Web of Science, or Google Scholar. However, Scopus is often more reliable in Asia due to its relevant indexing, while data from Google Scholar usually requires additional filtering,” Dr. Mahir noted.
He emphasized the importance of incorporating critical arguments in bibliometric analysis, especially for publications in reputable journals. Many high-ranking journals now seek in-depth and exploratory bibliometric studies, particularly for widely discussed topics like electric vehicles.
“In academic writing, the discussion section is the most critical component. Reviewers look for meaningful content that aligns with future research directions,” Dr. Mahir added.
He stressed that bibliometric analysis is not merely about describing results but also about building strong arguments and contributing to the advancement of research. After the session, Dr Mahir shared valuable tips for researchers to face publication rejections effectively and encouraged them to persist in honing their skills.
