Each research approach or theory has its own unique characteristics. For example, the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is particularly suited for qualitative research because qualitative research emphasizes content analysis of existing studies rather than the collection of primary data through surveys or experiments.
This was explained by Daniel Karim during his guest lecture on Advanced Research and People Knowledge Management at the SBM ITB (14/03). Along with Veronica Afridita Khristiningrum, the two SBM ITB alumni shared their experiences and insights regarding research methodology with students from the Doctor of Science in Management (DSM) program at SBM ITB.
During the guest lecture, Daniel presented a paper from his dissertation research, which is indexed in Q2 Scopus and titled “Bridging Multicultural Characteristics in Virtual Teams: A Systematic Literature Review.” This study conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) of 40 academic articles published between 2016 and 2020.
Daniel explained, “The main focus is to identify the relationship between virtual teams and multicultural teams, as well as to identify research gaps in the field.”
His research findings emphasize the importance of inclusive leadership, emotional intelligence (EQ), and cultural intelligence in enhancing the effectiveness of cross-cultural virtual teams.
Meanwhile, Veronica discussed a paper from her dissertation, which was also indexed by Q2 Scopus, entitled “Designing the Framework of Human Resource Department Ecosystem in Indonesia: A Grounded Theory Approach.” This study explores the human resource department (Human Capital – HC) ecosystem in Indonesia using the Grounded Theory Approach.
“The Grounded Theory approach is very suitable for understanding the dynamics of the Human Capital ecosystem because it is exploratory and allows the development of new theories about how actors and factors interact in shaping the role of Human Capital and its impact on company performance” explained Veronica.
In addition to discussing her research methodology, Veronica shared her experiences and the challenges she faced during her doctoral studies. She noted that pursuing a doctoral program is not easy.
“In addition to conducting research, we have to balance various aspects of life, such as family and work,” she explained.
She emphasized the importance of knowing yourself as the key to increasing productivity in completing a dissertation. She also shared several tools that can help in research, such as VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, and SciSpace, which make it easier to manage literature and analyze data.
At the end of the session, Veronica emphasized that research methodology has a crucial role, especially when facing a dissertation defense. Because without the right methodology, research can produce erroneous conclusions.
