Global warming is one of the impacts of climate change. But not only our earth temperature changing, our lifestyle and our food supply also changing, it would become a threat if we cannot take care of nature. In episode 46, SBM ITB Talks will discuss about "Climate change and our food supply" with Melia Famiola, Ph.D, SBM ITB Lecturer in social innovation and sustainability, who also active in sustainability organization Teras Hijau Project.
What is climate change? And why it is important to our food supply?
The changing of current climate imbalance between dry season and wet season. Which mostly happened is a change in the earth’s temperature to become warmer. And it is not a new phenomenon, its natural, but the problem is the climate change become faster and drastic. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) state that the increasing of just 2 degree in Celsius may leads into global crop failures up to 30%. And predict that the country with high population cannot fulfill their food supply in 2030.
Threat from climate change
The most threat of climate issue is hunger and poverty. Because climate change has the biggest implications, especially in the agricultural sector. SDGS report in 2017 found that one of four people in the world are experiencing malnutrition. And hunger will continue to increase and threaten us.
Climate change greatly affects the temperature of biodiversity in nature. The implications for our plants and livestock, such as the emergence of new diseases, resistance to natural conditions, loss of our food resources, reduce the rate of life, extinction of several species.
Innovations can help us to deal with climate change.
Nature already has a system to fulfill our needs, and we just need to maintain the resource form nature. There are three types technology that can support us to deal with climate change:
- Technology to reduce the impact of climate change,
- Technology to prevent climate change, and
- Technology to recover the energy.
Replacing non-renewable technology then creates technology that can reduce carbon emissions, will reduce the impact of carbon emissions and help us to deal with climate change.
Maintaining the balance
Our earth works in a life cycle, to manage the climate change and sustain our food supply we have to back to basic and follow the nature. Take from nature and to nature, reducing the use of non-renewable technology, and living in environmentally lifestyle.
There are small steps that we can do to save the earth such as wise in using the energy, replanting trees, not wasting the food, reduce fashion waste, and reduce plastic. Starting with small habit to we can give a big impact in our climate change.
