“What do you want? Where do you see yourself? What are you going to do?”
Head of HR Indonesia and PNG PT. Olam Indonesia Dedev Parulian said those basic questions must be addressed by students entering their career selection. Dedev revealed it when he was one of the four speakers at SBM ITB Workshop: Integrated Career Preparation entitled “What Company Looks in You?”.
Dedev presented the material “Preparing Your Career Path Journey” based on his 12-year journey in the professional world in various companies and industries. Dedev insisted that pursuing a career is a journey as well as a race.
Starting from the entry-level, people choose a career that suits their abilities, character, educational background, and interests. Career pinners must be ready for everything and try everything.
After successfully going through the first stage of your career and finding more specific interests and better skills, you have reached the mid/starter career point where you can clearly define your career path and do new things you want to do. As an entry-level or mid/starter career, you can also choose your career according to your decision. “Become an entrepreneur, or someone who builds his career through a corporation with various career stages and different journeys according to your choice,” said Dedev.
Along with Dedev’s introduction, the Career Preparation Workshop held on Saturday (4/9/2021), also presented R. Rangga Irawan as HRBP IKEA Indonesia. He presented material on Career Preparation for Future Leaders. For Rangga, a career can be started by introducing oneself to the question, “why?”.
Rangga stated that The Golden Circle must be answered and resolved before choosing a career path. After “why?”, then “how?”, and ending with the question “what?”.
After getting the answers to the three questions of the Golden Circle, you must know your 4A’s Talents to be future leaders: Ambition, Ability, Agility, and Achievement. Each is needed because every success comes with a price, such as with time, energy, and emotion.
People must have good emotional management to become a leader who desires to continue to grow and learn. Besides, one must be able to accept new challenges and answer them well. Starting with the search for information, self-knowledge, preparation period, mentor search, and self-motivation will make people successful in careers.
