To celebrate Pancasila Day on June 1, 2022, SBM ITB and Coventry University (UK) launch an innovative Dual-Award PhD scheme. Doctoral students from the Doctor of Science in Management (DSM) study program enrolled through this scheme will be entitled to two doctoral degrees from ITB and Coventry if eligible.

The launch of this innovative program is possible under the full support of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program enabling Indonesian students to gain research experience at overseas campuses. With MBKM, credit for courses taken abroad can be transferred to universities in Indonesia, thus saving study time.

This program is also designed to follow a joint research initiative of UKICIS (UK-Indonesia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Sciences), of which Coventry and ITB are two of the seven founding members. In addition, this scheme is one of the outputs of the research and continuing education collaboration, as stated in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by ITB and Coventry in 2019.

Many universities in Indonesia have collaborated with foreign universities in Dual-Award programs, especially at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. However, at the doctoral level, the ITB-Coventry dual-award program is the first in Indonesia.

Yuliani Dwi Lestari, the head of the MSM-DSM SBM ITB study program, emphasizes that the launch of this program is in line with the objectives of the DSM study program, namely to produce international standard graduates with excellent research skills who can greatly contribute to the world. With this dual-award scheme, students can choose to start their studies from ITB or Coventry. If you start from ITB, students will follow the ITB curriculum in the first year and then join Coventry in the second year. In the third year, students complete their PhD at ITB. On the other hand, if you start from Coventry, the learning or research in the first and third years will be conducted at Coventry, while in the second year, Coventry students will conduct their research at ITB.

Wherever the students start their studies, whether at ITB or Coventry, they will gain more experience and benefits by enrolling in two universities compared to one university only. Students will be able to access educational facilities, libraries, scientific journals, and laboratories at both ITB and Coventry. They will also be supervised by promotors or supervisors from both universities, enabling them to benefit from their academic excellence and international reputation.

Prof. Benny Tjahjono, the program leader from Coventry, emphasizes that this innovative scheme shows tangible evidence of the long-standing cooperation between Coventry and ITB, both through bilateral efforts and the UKICIS consortium. As a world-class university, Coventry University is proud to collaborate with SBM ITB, a world-class university from Indonesia.

The other advantages of this program from an institutional perspective are as follows:

  1. There is a recognition of equality between universities in Indonesia and abroad
  2. The courses taken can be transferred to their respective universities and converted
  3. It will improve the quality of the promotors/supervisors by being a co-author or collaborating in a publication related to students’ research
  4. It will strengthen research collaboration between the two universities, as stated in the bilateral MoU and the UKICIS forum.

In the future, this dual-award program will be available to all majors at ITB and Coventry. As a pilot project in 2022, ITB will be represented by the School of Business and Management (SBM), while Coventry is represented by the Research Center for Business in Society (CBiS) and the Center for Financial and Corporate Integrity (CFCI), two research centers at Coventry affiliated with Coventry Business School.

Two projects will be offered to the students enrolling in the September 2022 intake. Project 1 is entitled “Transitioning to Circular Supply Chains: A Multi-level Perspective Approach,” focusing on the transition to a circular economy by applying the concepts of transition and Multilevel-perspective theories to elaborate on what is needed to move toward a circular supply chain.

Project 2 is entitled “Sustainable funds: greenwishing or greenwashing” looking at the phenomenon of how investors in developed countries willing to make their investments socially responsible but often encounter many obstacles in reality.
