“The main reason businesses fail is because they don’t understand the law,” said Fahirah Syaliza Mokhtar, Ph.D. Syaliza is an Advocate & Lawyer at the Malayan High Court and a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Development at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
Syaliza was a guest lecture for the Law and Business Ethics course at the Business School of Management, Bandung Institute of Technology (20/10/2022). In her lecture, Syahliza explained the lack of knowledge concerning business agreements makes people misinterpret the clauses, which ultimately harms the company.
Syahliza explained that there are three international legal systems: general law, civil law, and theocratic law. These systems are certainly quite foreign for students who have never studied international law. However, the cases raised during the session made the students focus and eager to listen.
As a prospective businessman, according to Syahliza, SBM ITB students need to have legal literacy to prevent unwanted matters. A business is a legal entity with rights and obligations and how to choose the right structure for the business.
Syaliza closed the lecture with questions and answers and quizzes. The class was both excited and tense because Syahliza showed the material for five seconds before asking questions based on the material.
