SBM ITB, in collaboration with PT LAPI ITB, officially launched the Study of the Roadmap for the Development of Generating Engineering and New Renewable Energy to Support Net Zero Emissions by 2060 in Indonesia. The commencement of this study was marked by a Kick Off Meeting in Bandung on Friday (15/12), with the LAPI ITB team and SBM ITB preparing for this study under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Ir. Dermawan Wibisono, M.Eng.
In 2022, based on the enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Indonesia committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43.2% by 2030 compared to the business-as-usual scenario. To achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, Indonesia is developing various programs, particularly in the energy sector.
These programs prioritize new and renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, water-based electricity generation, and biomass. According to the 2021-2030 General Plan for Electricity Supply, the added renewable energy generating capacity until 2030 is projected to reach 20.9 GW, with the largest contribution from hydro at 10.3 GW.
However, as of 2022, the National Energy Council reported that of the total new renewable energy potential of 3,643 GW until 2021, only 11.6 GW has been implemented. This indicates significant potential for the development of renewable energy in Indonesia.
As the country’s primary provider of electrical energy, PT PLN (Persero) plays a strategic role. To achieve NZE by 2060, PLN needs to enhance its readiness in funding, technical expertise, and regulatory aspects.
The Asset Management, Engineering, and Integrated Management Systems division at PLN is responsible for designing and implementing this strategy. The engineering roadmap is highlighted as critical in supporting Indonesia’s transition to sustainable energy. This study aims to produce a Roadmap document for Engineering Development in the Power and EBT Sector to Support Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
