January 18, 2024, SBM ITB, celebrated its twentieth anniversary, culminating in the Avirama Nawasena Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Innovation Awards ceremony held at the ITB Jakarta campus. In line with the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, SBM ITB is redefining its role in shaping the future of educational institutions.
The “Indonesian Business Sustainability Towards ESG: Challenges and Implementation” event also featured three talk show sessions centered on the overarching theme “Education for Sustainable Development: Role and Strategy of Business Schools.” The sessions were led by three individuals deeply involved in sustainable practices: Jalal, Chairman of the advisory board of Social Investment Indonesia; Yani Saloh, representing the Katingan Mentaya Project and serving as a community SDGs specialist; and Melia Famiola, Ph.D., Chairperson of the SBM ESG Team. Dr. N. Nurlaela Arief, MBA, an SBM ESG internal team member, moderated the discussions.
Jalal, the first speaker, discussed the ESG transformation in Indonesia, emphasizing that while the practice is still in its early stages, several companies are beginning to move forward due to the incentives provided. He stressed the importance of increasing standards, ratings, sustainability rankings, and ESG practices.
Yani Saloh, the second speaker from the Katingan Mentaya Project, shared insights into the project’s initiatives and its impact on society. She highlighted the necessity of active community involvement and capacity building to achieve the long-term goal of a carbon-neutral society.
Melia Famiola focused on the role of business schools, particularly SBM ITB, in the sustainability agenda. She underscored the importance of addressing the region’s lag in progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through comprehensive educational approaches. Melia highlighted UNESCO-developed educational transformation plans and SBM ITB’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge techniques to foster collaboration necessary for sustainability.
