Resilient and sustainable supply chains are essential in business today. For instance, global furniture manufacturer IKEA consistently prioritizes sustainable supply chain practices through transparent reporting and strong governance, ultimately increasing consumer loyalty and reducing production costs.

“Prioritizing supply chain resilience is crucial to facing future challenges and building a sustainable, inclusive economy,” said Indra Ardiyanto, Head of Corporate Communication at Giant Food, during the third Avirama Talks on Thursday (10/10). The event focused on “Prioritizing Supply Chain Resilience in ESG.”

SBM ITB hosted this discussion as part of the Avirama Awards. Besides Indra, other speakers included Prof. Ir. Togar M. Simatupang, who shared strategies for enhancing supply chain resilience within the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework.

“Hopefully, this discussion will encourage companies to pursue environmentally friendly supply chains and reduce pollution,” said SBM ITB lecturer Dr. Melia Famiola, who moderated the event.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ir. Togar M. Simatupang, recognized as one of the 50 most influential scientists in management, highlighted the importance of integrating risk resilience and sustainability into supply chain management.

“Public companies are now required to submit annual ESG reports detailing sustainable supply chain practices and their impacts,” Prof. Togar explained. He added that unforeseen risks like natural disasters and regulatory changes like carbon taxes present new challenges for companies.

Prof. Togar also discussed embedding ESG in operational design and social risk management. Becoming an ESG Champion includes setting operational targets and KPIs, embedding sustainability across the value chain, and aligning business practices with ESG principles.

“Reducing packaging, fostering an inclusive workforce, and adopting recycling practices are crucial steps toward creating a circular economy,” Prof. Togar emphasized, underscoring the need for collaboration between companies and suppliers to achieve long-term sustainability.

Avirama Talks takes place every Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. WIB and is open to media outlets interested in exploring these topics further. The event is supported by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Social Investment Indonesia, Business Indonesia, and several Bandung-based startup communities and MSMEs.
