First impressions are formed within just seven seconds of meeting someone. Research indicates that approximately 70% of a first impression is influenced by non-verbal cues such as appearance, body language, and the firmness of a handshake. Consequently, creating a positive first impression is crucial for establishing successful business relationships.

This insight was shared by Elke Alexandrina, an expert in business communication and professional ethics and the Head of the ASEAN Public Relations Study Center (CAPRS). Elke delivered a guest lecture on Business Communication at the SBM ITB, entitled “Polishing Your Grooming and Business Etiquette” on Wednesday (11/12). She also teaches at the LSPR Communication & Business Institute.

According to Elke, a professional handshake is vital in the business world. She explained that an ideal handshake should be firm but not overly so, accompanied by intense eye contact to convey confidence and a friendly smile. The recommended duration for a handshake is 2-3 seconds, with 1-2 gentle shakes.

In addition to handshakes, Elke highlighted the importance of introducing oneself clearly and succinctly in professional settings. “When introducing yourself, stand up straight, smile warmly, shake hands confidently, and state your name and position clearly,” she advised.

Elke also emphasized the significance of body language in professional communication. Maintaining an upright posture, using natural hand gestures, and displaying friendly facial expressions are key to projecting confidence and professionalism. She encouraged students to maintain eye contact while avoiding fidgeting, such as playing with fingers or objects, which can signal boredom, discomfort, or nervousness.

To conclude her lecture, Elke stressed the role of appearance in building a professional image. She advised dressing neatly, maintaining good personal hygiene, and opting for understated accessories to support a positive first impression. She recommended simple makeup and tidy hairstyles for women as part of a polished and professional appearance.

Elke hoped students would apply the knowledge gained to enhance their interpersonal skills and cultivate stronger professional relationships. By adhering to proper business etiquette, maintaining a well-groomed appearance, and exhibiting a positive attitude, individuals can leave a strong and lasting impression in the workplace.
