SBM ITB invited Ananto Prasetio, a Business Analytics Practitioner, to speak on the Knowledge Management and Learning Organization course. Ananto Prasetio presents the way of data storytelling entitled “The Emerging Presentation Trend in Today’s Data-Driven World.” He presented the definition of data storytelling, how to do data storytelling, and what’s after the data storytelling.
As a graduate of Rotterdam School Management and a former banker with over 26 years of professional working experience in the banking industry, Ananto stated that Americans fear public speaking the most, despite being in a developed country. He also stated his mission and aspirations to transform Indonesia’s talent to support Indonesia’s 4.0 development.
The key competencies required to face industry 4.0 are hard skills, soft skills, and character qualities. Ananto stated that communication skills have been critical since the old days. For Ananto, data storytelling is a structured approach for effectively communicating data insight through data, narrative, and visualization. “Why do most presentations go wrong?. It goes wrong by the design and delivery of the presentation: either it has too many sentences, or the speaker is reading the slides,” Ananto said.
Ananto gave several tips on doing data presentations. The first is to keep it short and simple. Next, it is important to prepare for data storytelling as it strengthens presentation skills in design, research, and delivery. Besides, choosing the right topic is also as important as doing the presentation. Topics should be appealing, engage your audience, and leverage your expertise. Lastly, Ananto also suggested always using visualization when doing the presentation, as a picture is worth 1.000 words.
